This beautiful coffee comes from Taferi Kela in the Sidamo region of Ethiopia, sourced in partnership with Bette Buna — meaning “House of Coffee.” Their story is rooted in family and community: when Dawit and Hester were asked by Grandfather Syoum and Grandmother Emame to take over both the farm and the responsibility for supporting the village, they took that mission to heart.

Although Taferi Kela shares the same mountain range as some of Sidamo’s most recognised producers, the area has long been overlooked. No other coffee company — or any industry — operates here. Despite coffee making up nearly a third of Ethiopia’s GDP, more than 90% of the people working in coffee still struggle to make a livable income.

Bette Buna are changing that.

They support local farmers by improving farming practices, restoring agroforestry systems, and championing the importance of harvesting only ripe cherries. This results in higher-quality coffee, heavier cherry weight, and better pay for farmers — including quality premiums.

One of their most impactful initiatives is their in-house nursery, distributing more than 350,000 climate-adapted seedlings every year. Once mature, each seedling can provide farmers with at least $2 additional income per year — creating an estimated $650,000+ positive impact annually in a community where the average household survives on less than $50 per month (for a family of nine).
