About This Coffee – Goroka, Papua New Guinea

This exceptional wet-hulled coffee comes from four smallholder farmers in the Goroka region of Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands. Nestled between 1,700 and 2,000m.a.s.l., these 1-hectare farms grow Typica, Arusha, and Blue Mountain varieties in a region famed for its cool climate. The slow cherry maturation here results in complex flavour compounds and vibrant acidity.

Each cherry is hand-picked at its peak, ensuring optimal ripeness with a measured brix level of 22–24. The wet-hulling process enhances the coffee’s unique character, highlighting the heavy body and savoury-sweet notes characteristic of this region.

During the 20th century, Papua New Guinea’s governance transitioned from Germany to Australia following WWI, with the region playing a significant role in WWII. Despite its turbulent history, the country has become known for its distinct coffee grading system, with A/X representing the highest quality, evaluating bean size, shape, defect count, colour, aroma, and cup quality.
