How to Brew Coffee in a Moka Pot
Share
The moka pot (sometimes called a stovetop espresso maker) is a classic way to make strong, rich coffee at home. It brews under gentle pressure, giving you a bold cup that’s perfect on its own or as a base for milk drinks like flat whites and lattes.
⸻
What You’ll Need
• A moka pot (stovetop espresso maker)
• Freshly ground coffee — choose “Espresso Grind” on any of our coffees
• Hot water (just off the boil)
• A spoon
• Your stove or hob
⸻
How Much Coffee to Use
• Fill the filter basket of your moka pot level with coffee (do not tamp it down).
• Add hot water to the bottom chamber, up to the safety valve.
Each moka pot size is a little different, so just fill the basket and water chamber as designed — no need to weigh or measure.
⸻
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Preheat your water
Fill the bottom chamber with hot water, just below the safety valve. Starting with hot water helps prevent over-extraction and bitterness.
2. Add the coffee
Fill the filter basket with espresso-ground coffee, level with the rim. Place it into the bottom chamber.
3. Assemble the moka pot
Screw the top and bottom chambers together securely. Use a cloth or oven glove if the base is hot.
4. Heat gently
Place the moka pot on a medium heat. Keep the lid open so you can see the coffee brewing.
5. Watch and listen
The coffee will begin to bubble up into the top chamber. When it starts to hiss and gurgle, remove it from the heat.
6. Stir and serve
Give the coffee a gentle stir in the top chamber before pouring. Serve immediately.

Pro Tips for the Perfect Brew
• Use freshly roasted beans — our coffees are roasted in small batches and ground to order for espresso/moka pot.
• If the coffee tastes bitter, try lowering the heat or removing the pot from the stove earlier.
• Avoid leaving coffee sitting in the moka pot, as it will continue to extract and taste harsh.
