How to Brew Coffee in a Cafetière (French Press)
Share
The cafetière is one of the simplest and most satisfying ways to make coffee. With just coffee, hot water, and a few minutes of patience, you’ll get a full-bodied cup that really shows off the flavour of the beans.
⸻
What You’ll Need
• A cafetière (French press)
• Freshly ground coffee — choose “Cafetière Grind” on any of our coffees
• Hot water just off the boil (around 94°C)
• A spoon or stirrer
• A timer
⸻
How Much Coffee to Use
• 8-cup / 1 litre cafetière: 60g coffee (about 8 heaped tablespoons) + 1 litre water
• Smaller cafetières: use about 1g of coffee per 16–17ml of water
• 500ml = 30g coffee
• 250ml = 15g coffee
⸻
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Warm the cafetière
Rinse with hot water to keep your brew hotter for longer.
2. Add the coffee
Put your freshly ground coffee into the empty cafetière.
3. Add water
Pour in half the hot water, wetting all the grounds. Wait 30 seconds, then add the rest.
4. Stir
Gently stir to break the crust of coffee on top.
5. Brew
Place the lid on with the plunger up. Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes.
6. Plunge & Serve
Slowly press the plunger down. Pour and enjoy immediately.

Pro Tips for the Perfect Brew
• Use fresh, quality beans — our coffees are roasted in small batches and ground to order for cafetière.
• Don’t let coffee sit too long after plunging — it will over-extract and taste bitter.
• For a cleaner cup, scoop off the floating grounds before plunging.
